Winter Skills Intro

An introduction to winter mountaineering is probably one of the most important courses that you might take. We spend the two days (recommended minimum) looking at the key skills below designed to create independent mountaineers. We would stress that this is just an introduction to the skills and that experience plays a vital role, we deliver the skills that allow you to head out and then develop those skills and experience further. 

Course Outline 

This introductory course aims to cover the essential skills for travel in the winter mountains. Covering the core skills, ideally spread over two days, it is a comprehensive course designed to give you the best start in independent winter mountaineering. The following areas are covered.

- Ice axe arrest 

- Crampon movement technique 

- Navigation 

- Avalanche awareness 

- Route choice 

- Weather 

- Emergency Procedures 

Course Details 

Dates: 

All of our winter courses are tailor-made and run from 1 day to 5 days. Let us know what dates suit you best. Courses are based throughout the Scottish Highlands. 

Fitness: 

All mountain courses require a good level of fitness for big days in the mountains. 

Equipment: 

We email out a specific kit list for the course upon receipt of a booking form, you can also find a download under the about section. We have ice axes, crampons and helmets available and included in the course fee. 

Pricing: As courses are tailor-made just hit "join us" under the course that interests you and make an enquiry to find out more.  Our day rate for winter skills is £250 per day for the first person and £20 per head thereafter, to a maximum group size of 6 clients to 1 instructor. We offer a reduced rate for NHS workers, Armed Forces personnel and students.
